Denmark Trip - Day 15 - Tved, DK to Ribe, DK

Summer House, Tved – Woke at 4:40 AM and took some photos of the morning sunrise.

Slept until around 6:30 AM. Showered and had coffee. Organized things for our next road trip to Ribe, Tonder and Svendborg. At around 8:15 AM, a guy arrived who said he was going to finish installing Internet in the summer house.

I texted Lotte to let her know and she arrived around 15 minutes later. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get the Internet to work and said he thought there might be a server issue in Copenhagen. He said it might “fix itself” after a while and if it doesn’t, Lotte would need to schedule another service call.

At 11 AM, Carol and I walked to Lotte’s and had coffee, bread, and cheese. We then left around noon for Ribe where we would spend one night. The road to Ribe was surprisingly narrow and winding. We stopped in Jelling and visited a huge burial mound where Gorm the Old was “possibly” buried.

We also visited the adjacent church where the Jelling Stones are located. According to Wikipedia, in 1994, the stones, burial mounds and small church were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an unparalleled example of both pagan and Christian Nordic culture.

Nearby was a Viking Museum where we spent around an hour. The museum had some very interesting exhibits that explained Viking history and how it relates to the history of Denmark.

The museum also had a special 2022 Tour De France exhibit which, this year, started in Copenhagen Denmark and actually passed in front of the museum two days before we got there!

We left Jelling and arrived in Ribe around 7 PM. We dropped off our luggage outside the B&B and found parking in a nearby parking lot. When we got to the B&B, the owner, Eva, greeted us and showed us around.

Carol and I shared a room upstairs and Lotte had her own room upstairs. Eva said there were also two other ladies staying at the B&B. The dining room was downstairs, and Eva told us she would have breakfast ready around 8 AM.
B&B where we stayed in Ribe, Denmark
There was an information sheet in our room that said the building was built around 1575 and was the oldest building in Denmark which was saying a lot considering Ribe is the oldest extant town in Denmark and Scandinavia.

The building originally served as the official residence of the Ribe Cathedral’s curates for around 300 years. I don’t remember ever being in a building so old. The floors were extremely uneven and the ceiling in our room had huge oak beams that spanned the entire room.

Thankfully, it had been updated with some modern conveniences including hot water, toilet, shower, and WiFi!
😊 Lotte, Carol, and I went out for dinner and found a nice little Italian restaurant nearby named Pinocchio.

We each ordered our own pizza (Lotte – Fish; Carol – Veggie; Steve – Ham & Cheese). Lotte suggested we go on the Night Watchman walking tour. So, after dinner, we walked over to where the 10 PM tour was scheduled to start. The Night Watchman started the tour with a song in Danish which Lotte said is how Night Watchman normally start and end tours. It wasn’t clear if the tour would be in English or Danish, but the Watchman asked if anyone needed English and thankfully enough people said yes. So, he did the tour in both Danish and English.
Later, Lotte said she enjoyed listening to him because he spoke a kind of Danglish or Danish with a mix of English that was very entertaining.
Rainy night in Ribe, Denmark
It started raining and, of course, none of us brought an umbrella or raincoat. The tour lasted around one hour and covered fun things like floods, fires, beheadings, and hangings that have happened throughout Ribe’s long history.
